DJB Sunday Documentary: Slices - Pioneers of Electronic Music: Richie Hawtin

Whilst partying, crowdsurfing and boating in Ibiza, did Richie Hawtin, the guy who pioneered minimal techno, lose something along the way? The label boss, producer and DJ has received venomous criticism of late, for becoming too much of a brand and not enough of a musician.

Now one of techno's household names, it's easy to forget how hard Richie worked in the beginning. Originally a shy kid born in Oxfordshire, Hawtin lived in a small Canadian town adjacent to Detroit. The 'white, skinny kid' made a name for himself in Detroit's underground party scene, slowly getting in and working his way up through hard graft. Slices, including commentary from Hawtin himself and many other important figures from Detroit's underground scene, starts in the early 90s when he was just a small-town boy.
